Depression, MDD, Dysthymia
A great deal of attention has been paid to depression as a disorder. A significant amount of resources and research has been spent on understanding and treating this vicious and scary experience. Sometimes however, depression is not linked to a major corruption in our serotonin. Sometimes things just suck. Sometimes one of the things we need from our environment is for someone to bare witness to this suffering and stop pretending that we didn’t just survive a really hard time. My 7th grade social studies teacher use to remind us “Life’s a beach, and then you drown”. At that time it seemed a little harsh of a message for 12-13year olds trying to learn about the revolutionary war. However, in retrospect - life can be like a beach, it can be fun, we can struggle with the sand in our toes, sometimes it’s a great day but we are just not in the mood, sometimes we get caught in a rip tied and we have no choice but to struggle to survive. Sometimes once we do make it back to shore it would be nice for someone to acknowledge “WOW...you just struggled against a rip tide and OWNED IT!!”. Even still, sometimes an ally with a life preserver arrives right on time and we are assisted back to safety. Sometimes it is serotonin or another neurotransmitter in our brains. No matter what you need, or why this experience has come upon you, Holistic Wellness & Recovery will treat you with compassion, honesty, and high esteem as we work toward getting you the life you deserve. |

ANGER
The presence of anger has a similar biological impact to anxiety. Where the presence of anxiety can promote the desire to flee (flight), the presence of anger can promote the desire to fight. Anger feelings are natural, and appropriate. It communicates important wisdom as do all our feelings. SOMETIMES THOUGH, the response to anger feelings can be problematic. If you’re concerned about the way you handle anger, are court ordered to anger management, or your most important relationships are encouraging you to address this, we can work together to help you become present with your anger, and utilize that energy to address its causes effectively and productively. |

Schizophrenia & Other Psychosis
Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective disorder and other psychosis are highly misunderstood illness' that have the potential to be seriously damaging. The language used to discuss these features is often obscured by media sensationalism, fear, and inaccuracies. Schizophrenia roughly indicates a “Split Brain” not a split personality. Psychosis is a term used to discuss a syndrome that includes symptoms like hallucinations, (Auditory hallucinations - Voices, Visual Hallucinations, Tactile Hallucinations - bugs crawling all over, being touched or punched), as well as delusional thoughts (believing things that are not true). Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorders are examples of psychotic illnesses, however severe depression can lead to the manifestation of psychotic features, so can experiences of mania (Bipolar). Experiences with psychosis are terrifying and confusing. The risk of harm TO people with these experiences is elevated based on the lack of understanding and compassion for people with this experience. Treatment for these experiences requires a strong theoretical orientationtation and consistency in treatment. |
